Why does fate so enjoy torturing the most innocent souls? Does it always win? -Sonia- A young girl sat in a gazebo, gazing out across the Fields. The wind softly blew her curly blond hair, making it glint in the warm sunlight. Her bright eyes shifted endlessly, taking in all of her surroundings. “Mother, what else is out there?” Her voice rang out clearer than most children her age. A tall and beautiful woman with beautiful dark skin behind her laughed softly. “Sonia, my dear, there is so much out there yet to even be discovered. Many kind people, beautiful plants and animals, rivers, mountains, trees, even dragons.” “Dragons!” Sonia caught her breath. “I would like to see one someday. But mommy, is that all there is?” The woman knew when her daughter meant more than she was asking. “What are you getting at, darling?” “It’s just, can everything really be so good?” A dark look came upon the woman’s face. How she wished her intelligent daughter could be protected. But that was not possible. “Sonia, not everything can be good. Some things are bad. Some people, very evil. You must make sure you can tell those people apart from the good.” “Like a strawberry!” Sonia piped. “A what?” “A strawberry! You need to know which strawberries are yummy to eat, and which aren’t. They both might look good from the outside, but once you bite into the insides, it’s easy to tell. People are like that!” A tender smile came to the woman’s face. “You are exactly right. You need to make sure the people you trust aren’t like rotten strawberries. Do that, and your life will be a very happy one, I’m sure” Sonia smiled, and turned her eyes back to the field. With a laugh in her heart, she ran out into the field, picking fresh berries from the bushes as she went. 25 years later… “Aughk!” The queen of Hyrule, brave, strong, and powerful, fell. Her secret stone shot into the air as her now lifeless body crumpled to the ground. Every bone in her body was broken. The demon kings punch was to strong. “SONIA!!” Zelda screamed. Later, Zelda stood with King Rarue at his wife’s grave. Three glowing sundelions grew around it, a beautiful reflection of how the queen had been in life. Rauru spoke with a rough voice, tired from grief. “He was like a rotten strawberry, my dear. You were the sweetest of them all.” He knelt, and wept. The tears of one so powerful and composed was like a thousand year old bridge finally collapsing. It shook the very foundations of Hyrule. - -Riju- “Come with me child. Don’t dawdle.” Gala, a Chief, Gerudo, with beautiful long red hair, pulled a tiny child along with her as she traversed the streets of her town. Her town. Every subject bowed to her, her every will. She ruled with an iron fist, while remaining gentle to her subjects. Her young daughter was not spared from her rigid way of ruling. The girl tripped on the way down a set of stone stairs. “Come Riju, don’t be so clumsy. Are you alright?” “Yes, mum.” “Good. Now close your eyes.” Riju slapped her hands quickly over her eyes, but her mother removed one so she could still guide her. Keeping her eyes closed was very hard for Riju. She couldn’t wait to see what the surprise was! Her mother Gala’s hair kept brushing against her face. Someday, she wanted to have long hair like her. She would be just like her mum, a perfect chief. “Ok. You may open your eyes now.” In front of Riju, sitting patiently in the sand, was a small blue sand seal pup. It had a small bow in it mane, and large bright eyes. Her stumpy tusks sick out from a great smiling mouth. “Arrr!” She barked playfully. Riju squealed. “A sand seal!! Is she just for me? I will name her Patricia!” The sand seal licked her face as she hugged her. “Just for you. I know you love them, so I got you one of your own. You will grow up together. I hope you like her, dear.” Chief Gala walked away, leaving her daughter to play with the pup. She sighed, never looking back. A lone tear slid down the dark plains of her face. “Chief, are you alright?” A young guard asked her as she passed into the throne room. “I’m fine, Buliara. Please prepare my ride. We leave for the ruins immediately. My daughter is to be trained in my ways. She WILL become a great chief, I am sure.” * “I’m sorry, Princess. Your mothers caravan was attacked by monsters as they were traveling. Only one guard survived.” * 3 year later… Riju sat on the throne, her legs dangling over the side. Her now very long hair was draped over her back in a braid. “I must not fail, I will be reasonable. I will be smart. I can handle talking with someone from elsewhere in Hyrule. Ok, I’m ready.” The guards showed in a young man with blond hair. He carried a sword strapped to his back, and was wearing a mask. “Hello, my name is Link. I need your help, my chief. I’m sure you can help me.” “I can help you? Are you sure? After all, I’m only a child.” Riju said a bit wryly.
-Riju continued- Link looked her straight in the eye, ignoring everyone else in the room. His blue eyes were piercing. “I believe you can help, Riju, not just because of your legacy and status. Because of who YOU are. This is your chance to show that’s true.” She sat, pondering. “Ok, Link. What can I do?” 7 more years later… The battle of Gerudo was over. The Gibdos were gone. Link slid next to Riju sitting on the wall overlooking Gerudo town. “You cut your hair.” He said. “I like it.” She smiled, and whispered, “I felt like it was time to move on. I always felt my long hair was yet another way I tried to be exactly like my mother. I don’t know what she would think of me now, but I don’t need to know that anymore. Even with the upheaval and all the tragedy it has brought to my people, I know I have what it takes to move forward. I don’t need to be her.” She looked into Links eyes. “You were the one who helped me see that, the day you came to this town asking for help. Thank you, Link.” He smiled and put his arm around her as they watched the Gerudo, slowly but surely, rebuilding their lives. the sun set over the tall walls of the town. “Bet I can still beat you in sand seal racing, though!” Link jumped off the wall and sprinted for the stables. “With me driving Patricia?
