Pete Docter directed the 2015 American animated coming-of-age movie Inside Out. He co-wrote the script with Meg LeFauve and Josh Cooley. Walt Disney Pictures made the movie with Pixar Animation Studios. It stars the voices of Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Richard Kind, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling, Kaitlyn Dias, Diane Lane, and Kyle MacLachlan. Inside Out is about a young girl named Riley who has to deal with her family's move while five personified emotions control her thoughts and actions. Docter came up with the idea for Inside Out in October 2009 after noticing how his daughter's personality changed as she got older. After that, the project was given the go-ahead, and Docter and co-director Ronnie del Carmen worked on the story while talking to psychologists and neuroscientists to make sure they got the mind right. The project took five and a half years and cost about $175 million to make. The film's production schedule was pushed back because of big changes to the story and characters. On May 18, 2015, at the 68th Cannes Film Festival, Inside Out made its debut. In the United States, it was released on June 19. Particularly Poehler, Smith, Kind, Hader, Kaling, and Black's vocal performances, script, topic matter, narrative, and artistry earned it widespread praise. The National Board of Review and the American Film Institute put Inside Out among the top ten films of 2015. With a global gross of $858.8 million, it closed its theatrical run as the seventh-highest-grossing movie of 2015. Two awards were nominated for the movie at the 88th Academy Awards, with Best Animated Feature winning, among many other awards. Inside Out was named among the greatest animated movies ever created by philosophical journal Film and Philosophy. In 2024, a sequel, Inside Out 2, came out. Happy 10th Anniversary, Inside Out!
