Instructions

I sit waiting, watching as I always do. Patiently awaiting the day the light would dim. It had always been there a strong but soft glow each morning, evening, and all moments in between. It’s never failing burn fascinated me to no end. I would sit in my spare time, just watching it dance and flicker in the air it was surrounded by. It never seemed to grow dim and its brightness lighted the whole room. Day after day and it showed no signs of leaving, not once did it dim. It gave me joy to think of something that felt so infinite and everlasting. The thought brought me comfort. Maybe some things are forever. On one particularly clouded day I was sitting inside watching its flame. The soft glow warmed my nose with how close I came to it. I closed my eyes basking in its comfort. The sky began to dim but not the flame. To me it even seemed as if the light grew brighter. But it was not until the room had been swallowed by the candles light that I’d believed it had grown. And at the peak of its brightness it suddenly went dark. Smoke tendrils curled up into the air peaceful as the dead. Darkness seeped back into all corners of the room. The candle had finally burned out. A stillness grew inside of me. The air chilled around me and in the darkness fear creeped in and grabbed me by the head whispering. “Nothing is forever”
