Throw in your save from 2D Minecraft v1.3 alpha, and this will produce something sort of playable in beta 1.0. You may need to search for the surface. Both your inventory, and your world will be saved. Chests won't transfer correctly, however.
Note - when you load this save, things are likely to end up freezing up.
