houndpaw was dead. magpiepaw was dead. maroonear's two best friends in the world were gone, and out of all of them, maroonear was the one who least deserved to live. least deserved to become a ranger, leaving them forever apprentices in the afterlife. houndpaw was smart and funny. magpiepaw was the kindest cat ever. they both worked so hard. neither of them deserved their fate. grief. it wasn't something maroonear had ever experienced, until now. she was lucky, that death hadn't come for those she loved much sooner. but now it swept its shadow over her, drowning her in darkness. a single tear escaped her eye as she puzzled over the mystery of why the two best cats, the cats who deserved the world, had to die. why starclan chose them, and only them, to strike down. and she came to only one conclusion, one link between the two that starclan might disapprove of. they had both broken the warrior code. was houndpaw and magpiepaw's meeting up by the border illegally, their friendship outside their clan, the reason they died? if that was true...why was maroonear still alive? she was just as guilty as them when it came to their secret, whispered meetups. maybe she had gotten lucky again. maybe starclan wanted to give her another chance. maroonear didn't want to fall. she didn't want her name, the beautiful color maroon, to be reduced to the shade of her blood. she straightened as she made her decision. she would follow the warrior code closely. she wouldn't talk to anyone outside urchinclan, or even patrol the border. she would pledge her loyalty, her entire self, fully to urchinclan so she didn't go down the same path as her friends. she could avoid fate, dodge the inevitable. couldn't she?
