Our machine, the Seafloor Waste Bot is 1 meter wide, 1 meter long and 45 centimeters tall. Although small, our plan is to have dozens of them in each area. The Seafloor Waste Bot uses ultrasonic sensors to detect the garbage in front of it, and don’t worry; the Seafloor Waste Bot is specially designed to leave the animals underwater alone. Our machine slowly, but surely cleans the ocean while purifying the water! It works by first charging at a dock for 2 hours (solar powered) where it gets enough energy to work for 24 hours straight! Then, it goes into whichever body of water it decides to clean and progressively checks each layer of the ocean including the surface of the water, the middle and the seabed. The ultrasonic sensor also comes into action to detect trash and once it's detected, the Seafloor Waste Bot hovers over the piece of trash and picks it up through the bottom. To make sure the robot can fit as much trash as possible our robot also crushes the trash inside its body. Soon after, the machine will go around the ocean and you may think, how does it survive underwater? Well, we created a waterproof barrier around the battery by using a silicone coating. Now when the machine is done collecting trash and the Seafloor Waste Bot is full of trash, it finally drives itself back to the charging dock. It self empties itself at the charging dock in a little compartment where the trash stays until the garbage man comes and picks up the garbage at the dock. You may also be wondering what we would do with all this trash. First, we would sort all the trash into categories such as trash, recyclables and compost. We would donate the compost to local farms, send the recyclables to a recycling center, and we would try to upcycle as much trash as possible and send the rest to a landfill. This helps our environment grow by reducing pollution, giving all garbage a second life. Our mission for the Seafloor Waste Bot is not only to clean the ocean, but also to assist the problem of pollution in landfills. When people could be recycling their paper, they just throw it in the trash.
