Happy Mother's Day, everyone! It is one of those days where we get to celebrate our moms and mother figures in our lives, and I'd like to recognize mine. (Technically the holiday is on Sunday, but I won't be active then, so I'm sharing this a couple of days in advance.) To most people, she's "Chris", but to me she's "Mama" (or "Mom" when I've been calling her name for like 5 minutes with no response from her). Sure, she isn't biologically my mother, but she's the only mom I've ever had. She stepped in when my birth mother chose to step out. She's stood by my side through good times and bad. She was my voice when I didn't have the courage to speak up. She spoke to who needed spoken to in the pursuit to make my academic journey easier. She's never failed to make me smile. Back when I was in baton twirling, she made sure that I didn't miss a single practice, competition, or parade even if she couldn't be there because she knew how much it meant to me. She was at every choir concert, band concert, and school play. Out of all the women in my life, my mama is the one I look up to the most. She's got a heart of gold. She might not exactly have the patience of a saint, but she tries her best to be kind and respectful to everyone, regardless of who they are, where they come from, or what they've done to her or others. (Kudos, Mama, because I know that's not the easiest thing in the world.)
