If there is already a item where you want to place a item, then you need to mine it first (takes ~3 seconds, ~30 if you lag) You have 10 of each item at the start. If you run out of a item, you will need to mine it back. For even more tiles press Q, and it will switch to the second page - so 1, 2, 3 wouldn't be grass anymore but it will be signs of stuff. Press Q again for normal.
