The pilot was made in 2005 and premiered at the 2005 Cartoon Forum in Kolding, Denmark. Nick Jr. commissioned Little Kingdom in 2006. The show then began production in 2007, and it finally premiered in April 2009. Channel 5's Milkshake! began airing it in April 2010. Ben and Holly began production in 2007. During production of season 1, the show was later renamed "Ben and Holly's Little Kingdom", but, when it was created in 2004-2005, it was originally called just "Little Kingdom". The narrator of the pilot was former Milkshake! presenter, Naomi Wilkinson. When the show was released in 2009, there was no narrator at all, except in the opening intro. Ben's shirt was originally green, and his elf horn made some kind of clown horn-like sound. Apparently, that same horn sound effect used in the pilot was later heard in the season 1 episode "Books". The characters originally had outlines, just like in Peppa Pig. Ben was voiced by Ben Yelf, and Holly was voiced by Meg Hall. Later, they were replaced with Preston Nyman and Sian Taylor, respectively. There was once a character called Eliza Elf, but she was later dropped from the show later in production for no reason. Ben's parents were originally called Daddy Elf and Mummy Elf, there was another character dropped from the show called Prince Thistle, Gaston was originally purple instead of black, and Nanny Plum and King Thistle looked completely different.
