Derek being a goofy nerd was actually the one who did build Sam after all he can build robots and many other things so yea Derek did want a helper since these projects of his need help but He did not want to use Sam so he built another robot and let Sam free since he cared to much about her and did not want her to get hurt due these projects he dose so yea (epic lore !!!)
