Description

Just an animation from a GIF and and some text but, for Earth Day, I wanted to post this information: 1. Nuclear energy protects air quality Nuclear power plants produce electricity without emitting greenhouse gases, the primary driver of climate change. The U.S. avoided more than 471 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2020. That’s the equivalent of removing 100 million cars from the road and more than all other clean energy sources combined, according to the Nuclear Energy Institute. 2. Nuclear energy’s land footprint is small Nuclear energy produces more clean, carbon-free power on less land than any other clean-air source. You would need more than 3 million solar panels to produce the same amount of power as a typical commercial reactor or more than 430 wind turbines 3. Nuclear energy produces minimal waste Nuclear fuel is extremely dense. And all of the used nuclear fuel produced by the US nuclear energy industry over the last 60 years could fit on a football field at a depth of less than 10 yards! That waste can also be reprocessed and recycled. Some advanced reactor designs can operate on used fuel. The GIF is available on Wikimedia Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NuclearPowerPlant.gif
