My Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Before watching Gnomeo and Juliet, I had watched Sherlock Gnomes (a 2018 movie) several times. The latter film was meant to be a sequel to Gnomeo and Juliet, but I had no idea the former existed. Particularly, if I were to rate Sherlock Gnomes, I would give it 2 stars out of 5, it’s very formulaic and simply has no reason to exist. However, contrary to my expectations (a film entirely built off a punny title), Gnomeo and Juliet is a much better movie that Sherlock Gnomes. I, for one, really enjoyed it and found it to be a surprisingly good adaptation and take on the whole romantic genre. In fact, I would say it’s better than some Disney movies. It’s that good. And here’s why. First, the music was fantastic, I must note that. Right out of the gate, I loved the soundtrack for the film. It’s mostly Elton John (who was unsurprisingly a producer, maybe a little self-promotion, but alright), whose music really just works for any movie. And he wasn’t lazy: he composed an original song called “Hello Hello” that was stuck in my head for two days. It was so good it got nominated for Best Original Song at the Golden Globe Awards. Second, the plot was actually interesting. Obviously, it’s Romeo and Juliet with a gnome twist (just as you would expect, nothing groundbreaking). But it’s executed so well, with a fantastic voice cast and half-decent gags. I found that the characters were enjoyable to watch, and they had real potential going. There were imperfections and I was bored with a good part of the second act, but the film was set up with a skilled mind. Third, it excelled visually. The animation was REALLY good for 2011, compared to Disney or Dreamworks, and the gnomes were interesting to watch. I love the art style. It didn’t take shortcuts, and a lot of love and passion was poured into the making of this movie. The only thing I don’t like about the movie is that as a parody, it inevitably fails to adequately satirize. It doesn’t really resonate with me as a Romeo and Juliet movie, and I feel like it could have worked had it simply been a romantic film that was free of plot constraints. Criticisms aside, I really enjoyed Gnomeo and Juliet, and it was an amazing experience. I sincerely suggest checking it out for yourself. It may not be a classic, but it's one of those 2011 movies that’s better than average. What I watched it on: (I lowkey forget, i think Prime) Other critics: Rotten Tomatoes: 55% Metacritic: 53, "mixed or average reviews"
