The SS El Faro was a RORO cargo ship built in 1975 as Puerto Rico. In 1991 it was renamed Northern Lights and in 1992 was given a major refit. It saw service during Operation Iraqi Freedom and in 2006 was renamed El Faro. In 2015, when the ship had been in service forty years, it sailed into the eyewall of Hurricane Joaquin and sank with all hands.
