Alabama, Alaska, Arizona: No changes. Arkansas: Green is for the natural state, and the white and blue diamond is taken from the current flag. There are 5 stars representing the five regions of Arkansas, the Ozark Mountain region, the Arkansas River Valley, the Ouachita Mountains, the West Gulf Coastal Plain and the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. And with 25 total points, it represents Arkansas is the 25th state. California, Colorado: No changes. Connecticut: The 3 blue stripes represent the Connecticut River, the Housatonic River and the Thames River. The extra 2 white stripes make 5 stripes altogether, to represent Connecticut as the 5th state. The shield is taken from the current flag, as are the grapes. There’s 13 for the original 13 colonies, and the leaf is a 5 pointed star (since again, Connecticut is the 5th state.) Delaware: Colonial blue and buff are the state colors of Delaware, the Nordic cross is a reference to New Sweden, the diamond is taken from the current flag (and also its name of “The Diamond State”) and the hen is the state bird as well as the “emblem or mascot of several institutions in the state, among them the sports teams of the University of Delaware.” Florida: The orange is the state fruit, and the Cross of Burgundy represents its past as a Spanish colony. The sun in the middle is based on its nickname of “The Sunshine State”, and it has nine triangles to represent Florida as the 27th state. Georgia: It’s pretty much the current flag. What I changed was adding a fourth stripe, as Georgia is the fourth state. The canton is now a full bar, the arch is simplified and the stars are removed. This is all to remove confederate association. Hawaii: No changes. Idaho: The star garnet is the state gemstone, representing Idaho as “the gem state”. The white wavy line represents the Snake River. Illinois: Based on the Centennial flag, it’s simplified with just 3 stars. Each with 7 points, it creates 21 points altogether, representing Illinois as the 21st state. Indiana: Removed the text. Iowa: no changes. Kansas: The sunflower and blue background are taken from the oldest flag of Kansas. The added yellow triangles make a “K” shape. Kentucky: Green for the “Bluegrass state”, horseshoe for the state animal, and the goldenrods which are taken from the current flag. Louisiana: For this one, I used a basic tricolor while keeping the original blue color. The middle stripe is white, and inside is the pelican, but combined with the fleur de lis. The three blood drops symbolize Union, Justice and Confidence. Maine: This redesign is based on the first flag of Maine, but with a more simplified tree. To be more specific, it’s the tree from Massachusetts' naval ensign, as a sort of reference to how Maine and Massachusetts were once connected. Maryland: No changes. Massachusetts: A white background with a blue shield, taken from her current flag. Inside is a yellow pine tree, with a star on the top right. It’s colored cranberry, the state fruit. Michigan: The two green lines represent the two peninsulas that make up the state, the blue represents the ocean between them, and the deer is the state animal and also taken from the original flag and seal. Minnesota, Mississippi: No changes. Missouri: Keep the format, but simplify the seal. I cropped out the part with the crescent, bear and the eagle and placed that over the circle. I think Missouri's flag is nice, so I didn’t really wanna change much of it. Montana: The blue represents the “Big Sky Country”, the the mountains create an “M” for Montana, and the added gold and silver represents its motto, “oro y plata”. Nebraska: The green and yellow represent "the Cornhusker state", the pall shape is for the Platte River, and the wheel represents the transcontinental railroad. Nevada: This flag keeps the overall format of the current Nevada flag, but removes the “NEVADA” text and uses the blackish background from the previous Nevada flag. Since “Nevada“ comes from “snowed” in Spanish, I added a silver stripe below the sagebrushes, to represent Nevada as the silver state. New Hampshire: I kept the golden laurel wreath and the nine stars. I replaced the seal with a ship, with 3 sails on 3 masts to make 9, as New Hampshire is the ninth state. New Jersey: Yellow is taken from the current flag, with a white stripe to make three, as New Jersey is the third state. On the flag is a violet, the state flower. New Mexico: No changes. New York: The Union Jack in the colors of The Netherlands old flag. In the middle is the White Rose of York, the flower that gives this state its name. (Yes I do know the 13 colonies were all originally British but NY is the empire state so this one in particular makes sense) North Carolina: Format is the same as the current flag, but the colors have been shifted around to avoid its confederate association. The star has been replaced with the state flower, the dogwood. Hidden within it is a twelve pointed star, since NC is the 12th state.
North Dakota: This flag is based on North Dakota's coat of arms, but flipped so that the fluer de lis isn’t obstructed when the flag isn’t waving. Ohio: No changes. Oklahoma: Removed the text. Oregon: This flag keeps the “front and back” motif. The blue and yellow are taken from the current flag, and the added green represents trees. On the front is a wheel, for the Oregon Trail. The back is still a beaver. Pennsylvania: Blue and yellow are taken from the state's license plate. The white in the center is the keystone, referencing Pennsylvania's nickname “The Keystone State”. The black in the middle with two dots is a reference to William Penn's coat of arms, the state's founder, the two dots also representing Pennsylvania as the second state. Rhode Island: The current flag is fine. All I did was remove “hope” (the anchor is already a symbol for that), add a border around it and change the yellow to blue so it’s slightly easier to see. South Carolina: No changes. South Dakota: The blue half of this flag represents the Missouri River, the black half represents the black hills, and the yellow sun represents the state's old nickname of “The Sunshine State”. The medicine wheel repents the state's Native American heritage. Tennessee, Texas, Utah: No changes. Vermont: Vermont is the “green mountains state”, so this flag uses a green mountain (snow capped for rule of tincture, also an upside down V) with 14 stars. Virginia: A spear breaking a crown for “sic semper”, with ten stars as Virginia is the tenth state. The red triangle is a V for Virginia (and also symbolizes the blood of a tyrant.) Washington: Honestly I can’t really come up with anything for this one. Like, I want to keep the green background and portrait of George Washington, so honestly I just gave up and removed the text from the flag. West Virginia: The white background with a blue border is taken from the current flag. The axe and pickaxe represent the agriculture and coal mining industries (as well as calling back to the current flag and seal). Wisconsin: Yellow represents cheese, white represents milk, (America’s dairy land), black represents badgers (the state animal, the white behind also mimics the stripe of a badger), and the blue represents lakes. The stripe is also a “greater than” shape to symbolize the state motto of “forward.” Wyoming: Removed the seal.
