My Review: ⭐ I absolutely despise Shark Tale. I cannot bring myself to any other words. There is utterly nothing good in this movie (aside from some meme fodder). It is by far the worst Dreamworks movie and maybe even the worst movie I’ve ever seen. I could have gone my whole life by not watching this film, but instead, I wasted exactly 90 minutes I can never get back on a Wednesday night. You might be thinking to yourself: “That’s a little harsh, wouldn’t you say, Shadow? It can’t be THAT bad.” No. I’m sorry if this offends you, but this is among my least favorite movies of all time. Absolute trash. Now, of course, that sounded snobby, but I can explain. I can explain why this movie just fails in every way imaginable. First of all, let’s get the “positive” aspects out of the way. One, they have an all-star cast. Two, its kinda like the Godfather (a good movie, a great movie). Three, there was a slight gay allegory in the movie (SPOILER: Lenny is a vegetarian, and the hate he receives does symbolize homophobia, I think the producers confirmed this. This is the one good thing I can give to the movie, that it represents gay people like me :) That’s it. That’s all I can say that was “good” about the movie. Now the negatives… The plot is extremely formulaic. Every scene felt cookie-cut to fit with the company’s requirements. Scene transitions were miserable. I felt like I was watching a series of boring events and NOT an engaging storyline. The themes were generic and there was no emotional appeal, no relatability. To call it a movie plot is a gross misunderstanding; I felt more like I was watching a poor-quality knockoff television show. There was nothing particularly original. We’ve all seen these “themes” before. The characters – even with great actors like Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro and Jack Black and Will Smith – fall flat and do not resonate with the viewer. They are basic and I find no reason to root for Oscar, who, unlike his name suggests, did NOT deserve a nomination (shame on you, 77th Academy Awards). He’s a stock underdog who never reaches his full comedic potential. It’s a sad state of affairs when I can’t enjoy Will Smith’s voice. And Scorsese’s character was just miserable to watch. One of the movie’s worst pitfalls is that it succumbs to mindless pop culture references – and not even good ones. Oscar randomly quotes movies that have nothing to do with the scene, the music choice is a bunch of 2000s bland pop music, and the antagonists are based off the Godfather, which isn’t a terrible idea, but how many kids would resonate with an R-rated gangster film from 1972? In fact, the movie doesn’t try to appeal to kids. It squanders its screentime on loan sharks and love triangles and gambling and crime – things that I don’t think children have much experience with. Often, I can forgive a movie of these sins if it entertains me. But the film isn’t impressive on a visual level to justify that. Any fighting scenes are deadened to soft impact. None of the jokes are actually funny. The performance of the actors – as noted before – is wooden and feels phoned in. Sorry, Oscar, I was “not entertained.” Are you? And finally, it’s a shameless rip-off coasting off the success of Finding Nemo. Dreamworks can’t deny it, they’ve had a history of copying Disney. I’m still trying to figure out what the movie was trying to say, other than “This movie was made for money, money, money and commercial tie-ins and money, money, money.” That’s all :/ What I watched it on: Roku Channel Other critics: Rotten Tomatoes: 35% Metacritic: 48, "mixed or average reviews"
