My Review: ⭐⭐⭐ Turbo was a film I grew up with, watching it several times with that 8-year-old anticipation. I vividly recall being in love with the animated spinoff show, a cornerstone memory of childhood, and the snails’ action was appealing to my eyes. But watching it now, I realize it’s a moderately good movie, but not a great movie. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a smart film that kinda knows what it’s doing. It’s a beautifully ridiculous concept with some unintentionally philosophical symbolism – a snail competing in the Indy 500. It’s amiably ambitious and it works – somehow. Regarding narrative structures, the pacing and scene transitions were definitely well thought out, and the characters correctly match the settings and tone. There was a memorable inciting incident that stuck with me as a kid – a snail getting injected with nitro in a car (in real life, he would be dead, but if the film has no problems with snails with human intelligence, this is excusable). And the meteoric rise to fame – “WOAH, that snail is fast!” – had a nice montage that felt realistic for 2013-era internet trends. The animation – for 2013 – is somewhat better than average. Also, the music choice is pretty good – Snoop Dogg is a solid choice – and the voice cast was amazing (Samuel L Jackson, Snoop, Ben Schratz, Ryan Reynolds <3). Any film with Reynolds already is a tier above in my eyes :3 However, celebrity crushes aside, the film has some faults. First of all, its very formulaic. The story may be passable, but its not doing anything groundbreaking. It’s existing just because it can exist – a Dreamworks movie about racing snails and there’s Ryan Reynolds, that’s the main attraction. It’s kinda like they mixed A Bug’s Life with Cars. It also felt a little… vague, I guess? It was averagely comedic, not many laughs. And the plot definitely loses a lot of steam as the movie progresses – an unfortunate reality. I felt like the third act was disappointing. I expected what was going to happen and I didn’t feel like the story was satisfying. I wanted more – especially more Reynolds lines, it feels like they were rationing his voice because they didn’t want to pay more >:[ A random observation, but the human characters uncannily looked like the human characters from Bolt. Disney and Dreamworks have an ongoing relationship of copying each other (Shark Tale and Finding Nemo, A Bug’s Life and Antz, Madagascar and The Wild, etc.). In other words, the movie is worth a watch, but it’s really your average Dreamworks movie. Expect the expected and nothing more. What I watched it on: DVD Other critics: Rotten Tomatoes: 66% Metacritic: 58, "mixed or average reviews"
