No, like really...major spoilers fine, a little further... gaster possesses sans and uses sans' body as a vessel because they were good friends in the cannon universe and in this universe the piece of gaster is sentient and wants to live like he once did. he has no body though, so he takes control of his old friend. gaster's logic? sans never even used his body in any useful way. he thought that it would be better to use a lazy, boring guy to create an ideal world. to take sans though, gaster needed to have sans' brother supervized and entertained. so he hired Anjeans, a genie who can't grant wishes and all that typical genie stuff, but he was the cheapest option. next, gaster needed a place to do his experiments. he went up to alphys and asked if the lab was avialible for his experiment. in perfecttale, undyne and alphys have already met, as well as chara and asriel not dying and asriel grows up to be king. since boss monsters don't age unless they have children, asriel had been around for a while. all of the king asgore's secrets (the amalgamates) are still chilling in alphys' basement (wow that sounds so wrong) since toriel never went back to the ruins becuase her husband wanted to unalive children, the ruins were completely empty. gaster moved the amalgamates into the ruins. now, he needed someone to prevent the amalgameates from escaping or worse. he needed someone to go in, and do that job. NOW THE EVENTS OF THE ANIMATION ro is called to collect natral resorces from the cave in the ruins. the barrier prevents anything from leaveing, but not entering. but king asriel gets dissimissed and ro is told what her REAL job is.
