M/V Liemba was built in 1913 as the SS Graf von Goetzen by Germany; however, with the onset of WW1, it was converted into a gunboat under the name of SMS Goetzen. It was scuttled in Lake Tangayika, where it had been operating, in 1916; however, it was raised in 1919 but sank in a storm in 1920. It was raised once more in 1924 and returned to service in 1927 under its current name, Liemba. It has operated a ferry service since then. In 1997 it was used by the UN to return refugees to Zaire, which had recently had its dictator overthrown. In 2018 plans were put forward to renovate or replace it; it was decided to renovate it due to the fact it's still quite useful 111 years later. It is the world's last operational WW1 German vessel.
