My Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ On Tuesday, a friend of mine said “That’ll do, pig. That’ll do.” Afterwards, he explained that it was a quote from a movie called Babe (1995). This piqued my interest – the movie or the title was faintly familiar – and the very next day, on Wednesday, I decided to watch it. There was a part of me that didn’t expect much. There was another part of me that expected something great. Something about that pig’s eyes looked earnest and genuine – innocent. By the end of the film, I was gifted with an absolute moviemaking masterpiece. Babe is a movie that knows exactly what it’s doing. Every line feels perfect and well-placed – there is no room for improvement; the film already went above and beyond the call of cinema. The animal characters are personal, relatable, emotionally capable – they resound with you almost like a human. Especially Babe. He is packed to the brim with pure innocence, character, and heartfelt emotion. I never thought I would relate to a pig, but Babe defies expectations. The story is absolutely crafted. It is dark but touching. It does not shy away from reality – it makes an art out of the grief and the injustice. The film had me gripped the entire way; every sequence of events is beautifully haunting and seamless. I would also like to note that a profound mastery of symbolism is employed. Particularly relating to discrimination and class structures. “The way things are the way things are”, as one horse put it. It’s so brilliantly executed to illustrate a chilling actuality. In fact, the movie is beautiful to look at. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop outdoes itself as usual with the animals; the movie smartly blends shots with animatronics and real-life animals, to maintain an air of realism, which matches the themes in the movie. Every camera angle is an emotion – a pause to ruminate. The film doesn’t bolster itself with too much dialogue; in fact, it gave me plenty of time to reflect. I have never seen a children’s film with such a level of depth and magnitude, for the movie thinks for itself. It is a rare gem, an absolute treasure. I dare say it’s the greatest farm animal movie of all time, maybe even the greatest animal movie of all time. Give Babe a chance. Open your heart. You will find this film is more than meets the eye. What I watched it on: Tubi Other critics: Rotten Tomatoes: 97% Metacritic: 83, "universal acclaim"
