Prologue It was a chilly, leaf-fall day. Jetpelt was tired after hunting, and Lionpaw needed to train today, so he taught him how to disguise himself in the river, a WhirlClan tradition at warrior ceremonies. He couldn't complain; Lionpaw was an enthusiastic and brave apprentice who genuinely cared about his clanmates. The leaves crunched under his paws as he neared the river. It was getting dark, and he should end his walk soon. Just then, a startled mewl of fear and a desperate cry for help shook Jetpelt to his bones. He ran ahead to the source of the noise. He coughed. He had been coughing a lot lately. Once he was finished, his eyes flew open in shock as he saw a pure black cat with red markings and red eyes drowning in the river. At first, he thought he was a demon. He leaped into the river, his paws thrashing strongly against the waves. He grabbed the small tomcat by the scruff and dragged him out of the water. his paw was stuck on something. he eventually got the tom out. He coughed and sputtered. The loner was, too, but more from the water than from sickness. Jetpelt yowled in pure surprise as Lionpaw crashed through, and for a second, he saw a real lion, roaring majestically. Then it was gone. Just his gray tabby apprentice, with red and blue eyes and that little orange tuft that gave him his name. He looked over at the loner, and their eyes glowed red with knowledge and wisdom, seemingly reading what Jetpelt was thinking. And yet again, after that split second, it was back to the normal loner with no glowing red eyes. “WhirlClan!? What are you doing on our side of the river?" He jumped and blinked in surprise. It was Silverpaw. “They—” Jetpelt began, flicking his tail toward the loner, “were on... drowning....” Suddenly, her pelt was covered in herbs, and her eyes were warm as she touched a wound that seemingly evaporated. They shook their head. That one needed a scene. But Jetpelt understood.
