Instructions

I sit up in bed, sweating, and breathing heavily. “Maya! We’re leaving for camp in 30 minutes.” My father shouts. ‘Right,’ I think. ‘First year going to Camp Stoney Lake without Mom’ I sigh. I know that Dad is trying his best, but it’s hard without Mom. Sometimes when there’s a storm, I just wish she’d appear and hold me, telling me it’s alright. “Maya! Hurry up! Your cousin is here.” Dad shouts again. I groan softly, picking myself up, out of bed. I have no energy to deal with Amara, especially not after that nightmare. I slowly walk downstairs and I’m greeted by high-pitched, girly squealing. “Maya! Oh my gosh, I haven’t seen you since the funeral. We’re literally going to have the best summer ever, though!” She said in between squeals. I groaned again. “How about you just shut up and leave me alone!” I shout. My dad stood up, disappointed. “Maya, be nice to your cousin.” He scolded. I grumble softly, Dad glares at me. Amara decided to speak up. “It’s alright, Uncle Ben. Let’s just get in the car and head to camp.” Dad nodded and ushered us to the car. I grasp the necklace with the small jar of salt that Mom gave me. Dad said it belonged to his mother, Ann, but he had no sisters, so Grandma gave it to my mom. Before Mom died, she gave it to me.
