If you hear the WAIL tone, here is what you should do: From weather.gov: Immediately go inside a sturdy building during a high wind warning or severe thunderstorm warning and move to an interior room or basement. If you are in a mobile home, move to a sturdy building before the winds pick up or the storm system reaches your location. Listen to the local news or NOAA Weather Radio for updates.
MINI SIRENS ARE TESTED EVERY FIRST AND THIRD MONDAYS AT NOON CENTRAL TIME, AND ARE SOUNDED FOR THE IOWA STATEWIDE TORNADO DRILL AT 10 AM. IF YOU HEAR SIRENS NOT ON A TEST DAY OR STATEWIDE DRILL DAY, TAKE SHELTER AND TUNE INTO MEDIA. SIRENS ARE SOUNDED FOR(severe weather-related): WATCHES(3 MINUTE STEADY/ALERT) WARNINGS(3 MINUTE ATTACK/WAIL, MAY BE EXTENDED TO 6-10 MINUTES IF NEEDED). TESTS: 3 MINUTE ALERT AND ATTACK. SIRENS ARE NOT SOUNDED FOR ADVISORIES(unless wind speeds reach 60 mph or greater).
