➳ "Lina! Come in and wash up for supper!" My mother, Josephine, called out to me from our cottage. That was short for Rosaline, my full name. I was in our garden of roses, tending to our flowers. Me and my mother owned a floral shop, because of our passion for gardening together. It was just us and the flowers- and sometimes the butterflies that came to pollinate them. ➳ Awoken from my reverie, I sprinted inside, my magenta dress trailing behind me. Sadly, I could not reply to my mother from the garden, since I was mute. Not being able to talk from birth was definitely a bummer, but I'd learned to communicate in other ways. I knew how to sign ASL, which my mother had learned due to her sister, Kiara(to me, Aunt Kiara), having the same problem. I always had a close relationship with Aunt Kiara, especially because we were both mute and knew extensive American sign language. ➳ I used sign language to interpret that I was going to go freshen up in the washroom, and then skipped off after my mother nodded in approval. ➳ I took a seat at the wooden table, silently wondering what was for supper after filling two glasses of water and setting them on the table; one for me, and one for mother. Just as I began pondering the thought, mother handed me a plate of steamed vegetables and rice. She grabbed another plate and sat down on the opposite side of the rectangular table as I diligently began to eat my rice. By the time I’d downed my water, I heard a knock from the doorbell. I wondered who would’ve come to see us at this hour, since we didn’t know many people nearby, other then Fria(my best friend)’s family and the grouchy lady Mrs. Elinchia who lived next door. ➳ My mother walked to the door and twisted the doorknob to see who it was, and I stood behind her. Who would’ve come to see us? Unless it was another client of my mother’s from the city, I had no clue. And even her clients just contacted her through the internet- though there wasn’t much cell service down near our cottage. We lived about in the middle of Havenwood Forest, which is mostly unmapped due to its vast land area. ➳ The door creaked as my mother opened it to reveal the figure of my Aunt Kiara. I clapped my hands in excitement and ran into her arms. It was glad to know she hugged me back. We signed a hello to each other as my mother led Aunt Kiara into the living room. She told her that she'd make her a cup of tea and left for the kitchen. ➳ While mother was gone, I signed a conversation with Aunt Kiara, telling her about the restocks in our floral shops and the new flower seeds we'd sown into the soil throughout the last few weeks. ➳ Aunt Kiara was an amazing listener- but then I was too- mostly because we were both mute, but we didn't stare into space. We were both very immersed into our conversation before my mom came back with a cup of tea for Aunt Kiara, and a plate of lemon cream biscuits for all three of us to enjoy. ➳ And throughout this all, I was reminded that I wasn't alone. A wave of reassurance washed across me, one that I didn't need to interpret. I knew it meant that together, the three of us would be okay.
I kinda rushed to get a project out, so it's not the best, Let me know if you guys want a part 2 <3
