Like maybe they don't have high hopes for your talent or your academic skills. Did you feel bad? In The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Avery Kylie Grambs was a girl with a misfortunate life, was put down by teachers, other students, and even her own principal who didn't think she'd even thought about her future! She held it together though, knowing she'd have a good life, no matter how hard it'd be. Avery's interaction with the principal told us she was resilient and intelligent and gave us a great idea on her character altogether, before we really got into the book. An example of Avery being intelligent and resilient during her principal encounter was when she told the principal she'd retake the test, even a completely new test right there right now. I know this because, in the first chapter of The Inheritance Games, it says, “'I'll take the test again,' I said, trying not to sound furious, or worse, wounded. 'I'll get the same grade again.' 'And what would you say if I told you that Mr. Yates had prepared a new exam? All new questions, every bit as difficult as the first.' I didn’t even hesitate. 'I'll take it.' 'That can be arranged tomorrow during third period, but I have to warn you that this will go significantly better for you if—' 'Now.'" This proves Avery remained resilient and knows she'd get a good grade if she retook the test, giving us more of an idea on her character. Another example of Avery being intelligent and resilient during her principal encounter was when Avery says that she'd taken time to study, even though she was very busy with other family matters. I know this for a fact because, once again in the first chapter, she says, "I'd scraped together time—1in other classes, between shifts, later at night than I should have stayed up. Knowing that Mr. Yates was infamous for giving impossible tests had made me want to redefine possible. For once, instead of seeing how close I could cut it, I'd wanted to see how far I could go." This proves that Avery was very smart, and she even studied to get a good grade, knowing that Mr. Yates was a tricky test-giver. Throughout this part of chapter one, we learn a lot about Avery just by her and the principal's interactions, making it very clear how she'll be later on in the story. From saying she'll take the quiz again, and studying to pass an impossible quiz, we know that Avery is resilient and intelligent. So next time you feel discouraged because of someone saying something about you, remember Avery's story. She had come basically nothing but turned that into a whole lot of something.
