I’m the first to run with Soda and Nico following me shortly after. Paul is just still staring at the gas station. Now the whole building is on fire. I pause, waiting to see if he will follow us. Nothing, he’s staring at the building as if it’s the most interesting thing in the whole world. “Paul, come on!” I shout. “You have to come with us!” No response. With adrenaline taking over I run towards Paul and grab his arm, dragging him away from the fire. “What were you thinking?” I ask Paul once we’re a safe distance away. “I… I don’t know,” he says shakily. “I think the better question is what were you thinking, Pony?” Soda exclaims. I rack my brain for a creditable excuse. “I wasn’t really. All I was thinking was how I could never let someone die.” I guess that is true, though. “Well, thanks,” mutters Paul. “It’s no big deal,” I reply. “Come on, Pony, let's go home,” Soda tells me. “Okay.” We walk four miles back home. As soon as I walk through the door I see Steve on the couch and call for Darry who just got home from work. Once he comes down from his room, I tell him the whole story.
