In August of 2003, DCRC 1003 was wrecked after hitting a truck carrying steel coils near Wilson. The crew were mostly fine but 1003 had taken the brunt of the impact. A week later it was taken apart and put onto a flatbed where it was taken to Yuba City. DCRC examined the locomotive and decided it wasn't worth saving. DCRC kept the prime mover and other parts while the rest cut up and sold to Schnitzer steel. During the trip to the yard, 1002 was the power for the train, as they passed through Downtown Yuba City, they passed an odd crossing on Plumas Street. When DCRC purchased the trackage in 1987, this crossing was only just crossbucks and the former wig wag cantilever structure. But in the mid 90s DCRC installed a pair of Safetran 8 inch lights and a WRRS mini bell. The reason why is unknown but it was mostly a cost effective way to make the crossing a bit safer. This setup lasted up until 2007 when the area was completely renovated and new cantilevers were installed. The Mini bell is rumoured to have been sold to a collector.
