During the COVID-19 pandemic, SW1001s #1002 and #1004 were put into storage due to slower traffic. The units also had minor mechanical problems which were starting to become more annoying for the crews to deal with. In May of 2020, SD40T-2 8270 led #1004 from Folsom to Oroville where it would be put into storage. A gondola from Schnitzer steel was also tagged along. As the train passed through Knights Landing, a horn happy engineer gave quite the show using 8270's former Amtrak K5LA. Which it had received after it's rebuild.
