It is similar to the mudskipper (Periophthalmus modestus), which is commonly found in Japan, but is considered a different species due to slight differences in its fins. It moves on land using its left and right pectoral fins and can jump about 1m at a time using its tail fin. At high tide it rests on trees and rocks, and at low tide it actively moves around the tidal flats in search of food. In Okinawa, it is called "tontonmi" and seems to have been eaten, but now it is more popular as a cute creature.
