Chapter 1 – Maddie I sat up slowly, the hum of the plane banging in my head. There was a dim light in the middle of the cabin, just enough to keep it safe. A toddler and parent were sat next to me, on the aisle seats. I had asked the mother if she would give up her window seat. She had agreed. I rummaged around my backpack, looking for my glasses, as I was half-blind without them. I tried to silently open the case and grab my spectacles, as not to disturb the toddler. I did not want to be listening to that trouble-maker for the rest of the flight. I hadn’t had much sleep, maybe an hour? The small screen in front of me displayed the fact we has half an hour left of the nine hour trip. Thirty minutes until I could meet my mum. I could imagine her face, dark brown hair like me, beautiful green eyes and eye problems. I had been living with my grandmother for the last year, after my mum left London for New York City. Apparently it was for work related reasons, but I highly doubt that that was the only reason. My mum had invited me to come over to the big apple to live with her. I was, excited? Nervous? I’m not fully sure. So off I was sent, on the long flight to America, specifically John F. Kennedy international airport, located in Queens. My grandmother was eighty, too old to travel for so long, therefore she booked for me to be taken care of by air stewardesses as a minor, even though I am 15. Yeah, fun. I sat, reading my favourite book, 1984. Well, not my personal favourite, but certainly the best one I was forced to read. Time flies when I read. I’m dyslexic, so each page takes a while to decipher, the letters have a mind of their own. They dance and jump while I try to put them in the correct place. Anyway, after what felt like five minutes, the lights became brighter, most passengers awoke slowly. And I was pulled back into reality by a massive jolt. Over the speakers, the captains voice stirred, “Good morning folk, this is captain Ross speaking. We have landed in John F. Kennedy international airport, Queens, NYC, USA. It is Wednesday 4th of December, 2011, 4.50 am American time, and 12.50pm British, for those time travellers among us. The weather is about 4 degrees Celsius, British terms and 39.2 Fahrenheit for returning citizens. We hope you enjoyed this British Airways flight. Please take all your belongings with you, and have a good day!”. Most people began shuffling their way out of the plane, while I waited for the air stewardess named Marie. After everyone left, the Marie came to me. Her eyes were red and heavy with no sleep, her previously neat bun of ginger hair was falling apart. It looked like she was either hung over, or a new mother. “Hello again Maddie. How was the flight?” she asked politely. “Alright, not much sleep though.” I replied gently. “Ahh, I didn’t get any sleep either.” she blinked harshly, “ You ready? I’ll get your luggage down from below and hand you over to the staff.” Me and Marie exited the plane, I was hauling my backpack and other small backpack with us, whilst Marie had her own luggage. We gathered my luggage from the conveyer belt, and then I was given to the staff at the airport to handle. It was a person with the most obscure hair I have ever seen. It was a perm, dyed bright pink and navy blue tips. You could never lose this guy (or girl, I don’t know?) in a crowd. They was tall, with brown eyes and a goofy smile. Their nametag read, ‘Hello my name is….Robin’. Marie raised an eyebrow as soon as she saw him and whispered to me, “Be careful Maddie, they look, err, wrong.” I nodded, agreeing whole heartedly. Marie shook hands with Robin very loosely. “This is Maddie Young, and you are a supervision service worker?” Marie asked. “Yes, I am.” Robin pulled out their lanyard which Marie nodded approvingly at, “I am here to bring Maddie through security and then pass her on to Ms. Young.” Chapter 2 next!
