You can use them to get to places or transport objects to somewhere. But it’s best you know where the portal leads, because sometimes, these things happen to be a consequence of the timeline collapsing onto itself and you just have happened to land in the most frigid climates known and unknown to monster kind, which is exactly what happened to Xyster. This guy was minding his own business until he saw a portal, and gone in, curious to see what was on the other side.
