In the midst of the second world war, sir topham hat decided to have all the NWR's engines painted in black to prevent being targeted. in 1942, a fleet of aircraft bombed the island, missing the north western railways engines barely, multiple yards, branch line stations, and even houses were destroyed, NWR no.5 and NWR no.2 were sent to a seemingly "abandoned yard" where they were disguised as engines to be cut up later, and to everyone's surprise, it worked. they stayed like this for about a month, and came out unscathed, physically, mentally, both no.2 and no.5 had changed, but that story is for later.
