After the boat crashed, only Death Mort, and Bertram survived. Shepherd died from the crash and the rest of the team got corrupted. Mort and Death got semi corrupted but once they got corrupted, Vinny came in to save the rest of the corrupted survivors. He failed to save any of them so he escaped with Bertram.
