Prologue ---------------------------------------------------------------- The shoars crashed with roars as the wolves battled on the moonlit beach. The tall trees swayed, sending branches crashing down. An eagle screeched for somewhere in the treetops, piercing your ears as the wolves sank their jaws into the enemy’s ear. A wolf howled from somewhere in the mass of teeth and fur, sending a chain of responses from others of the group. This charged them with energy, determination forcing them to keep going, keep fighting until their last breath. “Bloodbane!” A wolf howled, bearing his fangs. A flash of moonlight hit his fur, revealing his dark brown coat covered in spots of scarlet blood. “Come out and face me!” He barked, flattening his ears. A black wolf emerged from the top of a large rock, his red eyes glinting in the darkness. “Hello, Bear,” He growled. “What a surprise to see you hear!” His mocking tone didn’t offend Bear one bit, only showing that Bloodbane didn’t think of him as a real threat. “You know, I thought you were too much of a coward to fight,” Bloodbane said, lifting a paw. “Bloodbane, you know I won’t run from you” Bear said, lashing his tail. “Maybe” Bloodbane said, looking up at the moon. “But maybe, you just need to learn how to fight!” He launched forward, crashing into Bear and pinning him down. “I’ve waited countless Howl Moons for this” Bloodbane spat, leaning close to Bear’s ear. “And now I get to see it happen; You die beneath my paws” His tail lashed in satisfaction as he bestowed his final offer: “Unless....You show me where the Sea gem is” His cold gaze pierced Bear's face as he howled in dismay. “I’ll never show you!” He growled, struggling to throw Bloodbane off. “Very well. You shall die beneath my paws of shame!” Bloodbane lurched forward, ready to bite Bear’s throat when a bark stopped him short. “The small peaks!” Her voice echoed off the coast, her eyes shot with fear. “Th-the gem is at the coast!” Her cream fur billowed in the breeze that swept across the island as Bloodbane rose. “Thank you, Rose. Now I can complete my task” He leapt off Bear, turning to gaze at him. “But not before I can get revenge” He bounded toward Bear, sinking his fangs into the dark brown wolf’s shoulder and sending a long scratch down his flank. Then, he bounded away, bringing his pack with him. “H-how could you….Rose….” Bear said, collapsing. Rushing to his side, Rose crouched next to him, whimpering. “I-I couldn’t let him kill you…I would do anything to save you….I’m sorry” She shivered at the thought of the black wolf and his dark eyes. “You betrayed me” Bear rasped, the effort almost too much. “Now, we all are doomed” Then he closed his eyes and whispered something Rose had never wanted to hear: “Get out Rose,.......go” Rose slowly got up, her whole body shaking. She knew he wasn’t dead…..but this was worse. He wanted her to leave. Maybe forever. But she would come back. She had to. So she turned toward the forest, and ran until the pack couldn’t see her pitiful face anymore. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
