The Great Northern War (1700-1721) involved a coalition of countries, including Russia, Poland-Lithuania, and Denmark-Norway, that sought to challenge Sweden's dominance in Northern Europe. The conflict was driven by territorial ambitions and the desire to control key regions around the Baltic Sea. Simultaneously, the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) arose after the death of the childless Charles II of Spain. This war was centered on who would inherit the Spanish throne, with major European powers supporting either the House of Bourbon or the House of Habsburg.
