Chapter 7 Vic Piper ran off, her lip quivering. Her hands darted to her face, probably trying to cover tears. Everyone was laughing at her and barking at her. Oh no. Oh no oh no oh no. “I, um, need to go to the bathroom.” I said to the choir teacher, grabbing the hall pass. I needed to find her. Now. I peeked into the janitor’s closet. Nothing. Well, there’s only one other place she could be. I walked into the girl’s bathroom. “Pip? Are you in here?” “No.” I heard a heavy voice say, followed by sniffling. I walked over to the stall where it came from. “Sure. Keep telling yourself that.” I said, with an eye roll. “Do you want to hear a story?” Silence. And sniffling. I assumed she had nodded her head, so I continued. “When I was in third grade,” I said with a chuckle, “I used to like cats. Like really like cats. I wrote a lot of stories about them, I liked pretending to be a cat, and I loved just being a silly little cat.” I took in a deep breath. “One day I just couldn’t handle it anymore. I was tired of being human. I wanted to be a cat. Why wouldn’t they just let me be a cat?!” Maybe I was overreacting. But it felt like I was back in the moment, and I couldn’t stop now. I took in another deep breath. “So I meowed.” “Everybody was laughing at me.” I wanted to continue, but I didn’t know how. The words were stuck in my throat, but even if they weren’t, I don’t even know what I would say. Silence. Then she walked out of the stall, still wiping a few stray tears from her eyes. “You ok?” I asked her. “A little bit.” Piper smiled. “Thanks for the pep talk.” “Don’t mention it.” I said. “No, seriously, don’t mention it. I can’t be seen as all sentimental and stuffs. Hurts my rep.” Piper chuckled. “I can do that.” We then walked out of the bathroom.
