Whereas Optimus is benevolent, Megatron is cruel and will use violence to get his way. Before the war, Megatron was a lowly miner called D-16. He loathed the way that Cybertron functioned and started a rebellion. He named himself after Megatronus, one of the original 13 primes. He was able to convince a young Optimus Prime when he was still called Orion Pax to join his revolution. Together they became friends and leaded the rebellion. They started to become enemies when Megatron became increasingly violent.
