Episode 1 Narrator: Today started as a normal day for Scarlett. The only thing she had left was history; her worst subject, with her least favorite teacher Ms. Muldoon. (ring) Scarlett: (tired and so over it) Uggh! I don’t know how I will survive another HOUR of school. *note there should be background noise on that line, because it is set at her school. So if possible get a prop and add some noise. (sound of books being placed on a desk) Ella: (friendly, also kind of quiet) Hey Scarlett Scarlett: (distracted) Hi Els. (pronounce this like elz) (background noise of class) Ms. Muldoon: Please get settled quietly (mumbles of okay, sorry and okay Ms. Muldoon) Teacher: Today I will hand back you reports on the French revolution. Some of you had reports that barely passed, yet some of you had quite excellent reports that truly showcased what the topic was truly about, and was clearly well studied. There were a few of you that didn't pass. (Very serious tone for this whole paragraph) I want each of you to reflect on your score, and think about what you could’ve done to achieve a higher score. Narrator Scarlett peered down towards her piece of paper, covered in red ink. The mark read D-. Sprawled across the top of the paper Ms. Muldoon wrote “See me after class.” Ella: (whispers) What did you get? Scarlett: (whispers)(complains) I got a D minus!! My report wasn’t THAT bad. What about you? What did you get? Ella: (whispers) I got an A. Scarlett: (whispers) Lucky! I don’t know how you are able to pass all of these STUPID tests. I don’t care about the french revolution, and about Napoleon Bonaparte. Teacher: Everyone PLEASE settle down. Moving on, I would like to say that the standards in my class are very high. I would appreciate it if everyone put a little more effort into their reports next time. Narrator: She had her eyes set on Scarlett. TeacherI will set all of you into groups to work on your next big project. In your groups you will be working on an important period of history of your choice. In 3 weeks we will have a sharing of our reports, and you will be graded accordingly… Is that understood? (murmurs of yes) Teacher: Here are your groups: Diana, Isaiah, Scarlett, and Zane you are group one. Logan, Ella, Rowen, and Nicole; group 2. Luca, Mark, Kyleigh, Hannah, and Kelly, group 3. Eleanor, Cody, Kyle and Kai; You have group 4. Lastly, Valentina, Aria, Jaylin, and Elliot you will be group 5. I will ask of you to find a desk where you will meet, the only thing you need to accomplish today is what period of history. Any questions??? Narrator: Scarlett knew that when Ms. Muldoon asked if anyone had questions she didn’t expect anyone to answer. So she decided to just get up and find her group. (sound of people getting up) Diana: So I was thinking maybe we should do our topic on The Industrial Revolution And Societal Consequences? Isaiah: Well, I guess that could work. Scarlett: Are you sure? I really think that we could go with something simpler, how about the civil war. Zane: No, there's NO way that I am doing a report on the civil war! What, are we now in MIDDLE SCHOOl or something? Scarlett: Well do you have any ideas? (mad) Zane: I think we better just go with the industrial revolution, I mean we aren’t ever going to come up with anything better. Scarlett: Fine! Diana: So, It’s settled then. Diana: How about I do all the research. Isaiah you can help me write it up, and Scarlet and Zane, well you can just edit it. (kind of saying that they aren’t smart enough) Scarlett: (protesting) No! How about we all do the research and writing TOGETHER. Zane: Personally, I was fine with the first idea. Scarlett: Oh, you're such a baby you never want to do any work.. Zane (cuts her off): That IS NOT true. Teacher: Okay, you all have had plenty of time to decide a topic. Narotor: She looked at the clock. Teacher: Class is over, you may go home. (sound of people getting up) Scarlett: Ms. Muldoon.. You wanted to see me. Teacher: Yes.. Please sit down. (pauses) I wanted to talk to you about your recent test, I just really wish that you applied yourself more to your schoolwork in the same way that you apply yourself with other activities. (continued in credits)
Scarlett: Yes.. Of course. Teacher: I could always arrange a tutor for you if that is what you think would work the best. Scarlett: Well, I could have Ella tutor me. Teacher: That isn’t exactly what I think is best in this situation, I will say that her grades are pretty good. I think though in this situation Diana might be best. Scarlett: Please no.. Teacher: Sometimes in class I notice you daydream a lot, and you are often doodling instead of note-taking or talking to Ella. I really wish that you decided to take this more seriously. Your grades in sophomore year matter quite a lot. Let me just be clear that you aren’t.. (pauses) doing very well in my class. You aren’t at a standard where collages would like you to be at when they look for applicants. Scarlett: Understood. Teacher: I would hope that you decide that you want to try and go above and beyond in this next trimester, who knows maybe next year you will be taking A.P classes. Teacher: I would also like to ask you to get your father’s signature on this paper. I need to make sure that he monitors your homework, and can help you get to the next level. Please make sure to bring this back to me tomorrow. Understood? Scarlett: Yes. Can I go now? Teacher: Of course. Narrator: Scarlett headed toward the door. Teacher: Oh and Scarlett.. (pause) If you ever need to talk about anything, my classroom is always open. Scarlett: Thanks, but that isn’t necessary. (“thanks” is sweet then it turns in annoyance with the “but that isn’t necessary) (sound of door closing) Narrator: And with that Scarlett headed outside to walk home with Ella. Ella: What took you so long?? (not mad, just questioning) Scarlett: Ms. Muldoon wanted to talk to me about (mimicking voice) “Applying myself more” she thinks that I need to push myself more so that I can get into a good college. Ella: Well, college is important. (quiet) Scarlett: (not really listening to Ella, just complaining) And then she’s all like (mimicking) “Oh you're going to need a parent signature” She clearly just has something against me. Ella: I think that Ms. Muldoon is actually pretty nice, she’s just a little strict. Scarlett: Easy for you to say, you always get perfect grades. (complaining but not mad) Ella: Scarlett, that’s just because I take the time to study. Unlike someone I know. (jokingly) Narrator: After 8 minutes of walking, they arrived at the block that they lived in. Scarlett: Bye, Elz!! Ella: See you tomorrow!!! Narrator: And with that Scarlett walked into her house to find her father, and complain about her test. Scarlett: I’m home!! Isabella: Hi Scarlett!! Scarlett: Hi, Do you know where dad is? Isabella: No, I figured you would have some idea of where he was. He didn’t call you?? Scarlett: No. Scarlett: (escalates) Dad!! Daaaaaad!!!!!! DAAAAAAAAAAAD!!! (pause) (fearful, quiet) dad?
