Even though the spikes can absorb all kinds of energy, it can't absorb the soul of someone. It can, however, disrupt the nervous system of the target if hit, assuming they have a nervous system, which I'm guessing .speed doesn't have. It can disrupt the nervous system through absorbing the electrical sparks that travel through the nervous system, meaning the target essentially can't act while being punctured by one of these.
