Instructions

A day had passed since Fox left, and Rose was approaching Zenra. Zenra was majestic, made of stone and painted gold, with little emeralds studded between the golden stones. Like Skyline, Zenra had a guard, but the guard gave off a different impression. It was a white-pelted girl, with gold armor decorated with glittery swirls, and her tail had a dagger strapped to it. The dagger basically screamed, it’s totally normal to have a dagger strapped to one’s tail. I promise I won’t kill you! How the guard talked was definitely telling Rose that she wasn’t evil. “Greetings,” the guard said. “My name is Pearl. You look very young to be out here. You’re not from Skyline, are you?” Here Pearl’s eyes narrowed. “I promise I’m not,” Rose said. “I only just escaped from that awful place.” “Good,” Pearl said lightly. “And why are you here?” “The-the Wilfur Journey,” Rose stammered. “Oh, that thing,” the guard dismissed it with a flick of her tail. “Come on in, I’m sure you haven’t eaten for days.” Rose realized that she actually had been so focused on Skyline, she hadn’t eaten since…was it the shop at home? Pearl pushed the glimmering gold gates open to reveal even more majestic buildings. Kittens scampered around making mischief, while cats her age were sharing prey, perfecting battle and hunting techniques, and sunning themselves. Older senior cats were talking with each other, managing their stores and shops, or entertaining the younger cats. “While you’re here you can stay with our Mids,” Pearl said, waving her tail to the cats Rose’s age. “Mids?” Rose asked. “Midway through kittens and senior cats,” Pearl explained, leading Rose over to a dark black girl cat who was training with another brown-colored Mid. “Forest, Raven,” Pearl nodded respectfully, which Rose thought was strange. Why would a senior cat bow to a Wilfur? Or, in Zenra’s case, Mid. The black cat who Rose assumed was Raven stood. “Who is she?” Raven’s eyes narrowed. “And why does she smell of Nightfrost?” Forest growled. Rose shied uncomfortably. “Do you back down from a challenge?” Pearl’s voice whispered like a light breeze. Rose’s pelt bristled as she unsheathed her claws menacingly. “I am a Shadowspin,” she hissed. “Tread a paw step wrong and my Shattershadows will be upon you.” Rose decided not to include the detail that she had never used the power on her own. “A Shadowspin?” Forest asked. “Nice try.” “Forest!” Pearl scolded. “Now, Raven. Would you like to accompany Rose while she is here?” “Sure,” Raven mumbled. Pearl bowed her head and left. The moment she did, Rose asked, “Why is a senior cat so respectful to a Mid?” “We’re royalty,” Raven said proudly. “I’m the princess, Forest is the prince. I’m gonna be queen someday, when Mother dies!” “A princess?” Rose echoed. “Yup,” Raven said. “Want me to show you what we do for fun around here?” “Of course!” was Rose’s reply. “For one thing, we sun,” Raven pointed to a white glossy Mid sunning on a hill. “For another, we eat,” Raven pointed to the shops. “Forest sulks a lot,” she pointed to Forest, who hadn’t made a noise since Pearl left. “We ask permission to hunt,” she pointed to Pearl, at the entrance. “We battle train,” she pointed to a few Mids tumbling around on the hill, batting at each other ferociously. “Let’s go to the shops first,” Raven decided. They sauntered over to a small building that was shimmery and bright. “Raven!” a delicate voice said behind him. Rose looked and saw a shiny white cat with ocean blue eyes. For a moment the stared at each other. The white cat in recognition, and Rose in confusion. “I’m sorry,” Raven said. “Do you know each other?” “No,” Rose said, while the white cat opened her mouth and hesitated. “I’m Sapphire,” the cat said. “Er…Raven, I think you should check on Forest.” Raven glanced back at the tree. Forest was confronting a small kitten, accusing it of something. Raven hurried off quickly. “Who are you?” Rose asked. “Really, this time.” “I am one of the most reliable killers in Skyline,” Sapphire hissed smoothly, flexing her claws, which Rose noticed, were unsheathed. “I am the most powerful cat on land!” Rose spat, which wasn’t true, but she hoped it would scare Sapphire. “Then I challenge you!” Sapphire shouted. Cats were gathering around now, and Raven was trying to shove to the center. “If you kill me, Skyline will stop sending cats after you,” Sapphire growled. “If I win, Skyline will never stop until they have conquered everything.” “Rose, don’t do it,” Raven pleaded. “We’ll lose you, too.” “No confidence in your little Mid?” Sapphire laughed darkly. “I’m not surprised.” Rose met Sapphire’s eyes as she said, “I accept. And I’m a Wilfur.”
