I have made a variety of theories about Adderpaw being evil, (Namely my cave theory: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1010650879/ ) and this one is an addition to the list. I have a theory that Adderpaw will be recruited by OJ and become evil, so let's go into the points. [next] Firstly, when Adderpaw and Hazepaw have their bickering session, OJ could very well be eavesdropping. Honestly, it makes sense for her to be just outside the camp walls listening in; in OJ's eyes, if a cat has information on you, you need to know their weaknesses and be able to play them like a fiddle (at least I imagine that would be her perspective). So, she will learn to understands that Adderpaw is very prideful but also very indecisive about making moral decisions. This means that she will be very manipulatable and a powerful piece if OJ is able to convince her what she is doing is the right thing. [next] It is also possible she was listening in when Adderpaw was in Skyclan's camp, but even if she wasn't, she'd easily be able to get that information out of a Skyclan cat once she joins (Theory about her joining Skyclan: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1050333499/ ). I think that OJ, learning of Adderpaw's distaste for corrupt governments, will offer Adderpaw a deal; a way to keep all of her friends safe and take down Crimsonfang. This would start out small, with her trading information with OJ over the border, but as OJ gets more control over Adder, it escalates further. Alternatively, OJ could also convince Adder that Shadowclan has a corrupt government itself. That way, Adderpaw will think she is doing the right thing when plotting against, and possibly killing, Redye and Featherstar. [next] Small detail, but this could also explain how Hazepelt knows the pine tree trick. Adderpaw learnt the trick from OJ and maybe let it slip to Hazepelt or Goldenpaw. [next] This is where I imagine BSC comes into the picture; with Adderpaw in Shadowclan, it is easy to quickly make BSC a trusted member of the clan before cleanly killing of Redeye, making BSC deputy. After this, it's even easier to kill off Feather and make BSC leader. I assume Adder would become deputy as a way to get an even tighter chokehold on Shadowclan. [next] Wouldn't it be ironic? Adderpaw becoming a murderous, bloodthirsty deputy in a corrupt government after swearing to take down a murderous, bloodthirsty deputy in a corrupt government? It would be poetic, perfect, even! A beautiful bow on top of Adder's villain arc. [next] Another thing I've always found interesting is that in the N+C of chapter 28, Meadow refers to Adder as Odysseus. For those of you unaware, Odysseus/Ulysses is a Greek myth where a veteran of the Trojan War tries to sail back home after the war is over. Due to his pride (hubris) he angers the God of the Sea, Poseidon, which causes the god to try and kill him at every turn. All four-hundred-something of his crewmates die, but Odysseus miraculously makes it home to his wife after more than a decade. Applying this to Adder, I feel that this shows that Adder's bad decisions and pride will cause all around her to die because of her, directly or indirectly. I especially think it'd be fun if she kills/is the reason Hazepelt, Goldencloud, and Cedarstripe die. [next] Where it gets interesting, for me at least, is the fact that Adderpaw isn't an active mother in Salmonpaw's life. Though I feel Adder will slowly decline morally throughout the series, I don't think she would ever be one to abandon her family. My thoughts for this is that Adderpaw would eventually feel overcome by guilt because of her crimes, especially if she had to kill Goldencloud and Hazepelt. After this, I imagine she either flees Shadowclan, afraid she'll hurt more people (which could be a reference to Verse 1 Part 1 of the Cave, as shown in the image) or OJ will see her split loyalty and kill her to make sure she doesn't go against their cause. I like to imagine she will be Odysseus who doesn't get a happy ending; she never gets to go home to Cherrypaw and her children, and in the end accidentally kills her own daughter.
