The underwing coverts are bright yellow, and the rump is very bright, almost metallic green. The neck is grey-brown merging to greenish on the mantle. The tail is edged with olive-brown and tipped with green. The irises are greenish-yellow or yellow, and the legs and feet are blackish-grey. The upper mandible is dark, almost black, and the lower mandible is a yellowish colour. Juveniles are duller than the adults. Their flight is described as fast and direct. There are three subspecies: -P. cryptoxanthus cryptoxanthus -P. cryptoxanthus tanganyikae -P. cryptoxanthus zanzibaricus
