Excerpt from "Virtue", a book in the making by @madi_the_animator Fiona ran and ran as fast as her legs could take her. Away from the Seraphims and their pretty lies, and away from the life she was leaving behind. She clutched her infant tight to her chest as tears steamed steadily down her cheeks. She heard yelling and chaos behind her but didn't look back, she knew any waver in her steps could result in her doom. When the roaring havoc behind her finally quieted to a restless whisper, she slowed to a stop. Drenched in her sweat and tears, she ignored her aching feet and sat down on a withered log as she tended to her wounds. She lulled the child to sleep, singing an ancient song her mother would sing to her, but her baby would not rest. she stirred, uncomfort hampering her ease. The child began to weep. Fiona held her closer but her baby continued crying. She finally heard that fateful sigh she knew all too well. "Why hello, dear Fiona. Fancy meeting you here-" "Leave, Gabriel. Now," Fiona said fiercely. "But I've only just arrived," Gabriel slowly walked into view from behind a shrub with a sly smile. Fiona noticed how he proudly spread his wings, radiating glory and power, another trick he used many times on her. "Oh, I do hope you credit me for how long I've been waiting there. It really is quite a bore, and a pain if you're in the wrong position." he said dramatically. "Anywho, how's-" "What did I just say?" Fiona interrupted. Gabriel didn't take a moment to pause. " Well I don't remember, but I would like to continue speaking after you so rudely interrupted-" "Go!" She roared, her infant wailing with unease. Gabriel ignored her. "Oh, look what we have here!" Gabriel exclaimed, creeping toward the child as she grew louder. "Does she not like me? Well I can fix that!" "No! No more fixing things, Gabriel! I don't want to see you right now, or ever again-" "Oh, yes you do." He said, his eyes glowing an ominous gold as he used his enchantments. Fiona hesitated for a minute, her face contorting into a confused expression as her eyes began to glow the same shade as the Angel's. "Yes...I...wait, no! Don't ever use that trick again!" She screamed. Gabriel's mischievous face became disoriented as the glow flickered out from his eyes. "How-" "Go!" she screamed again. "For the last time, go back to your pathetic little pathetic Angel friends-" "Seraphim," Gabriel corrected. "And leave me and my child alone! You've already caused enough destruction for my family, now just go ruin someone else's life so I can wither away in peace!" She was hysterical now, which Gabriel noticed but ultimately ignored. "Y-you...you think I'm-we're... pathetic?" He stammered, his usual egotistical manner faltering. Fiona ignored him as she pointed back the way she came using one arm as her other held her child close. If she didn't know better, she might have seen hurt in his eyes. She wasn't an idiot. She scowled in response as he humbly walked away, his head and wings drooping in defeat. She remembered how she used to see him; a carefree, confident, miracle. The man she loved, who she thought loved her back. But she was wrong. She could see now, how wrong she really was, and how much the fox-of-a-man manipulated her. As she looked down at her bare baby’s back, she could see the smallest of wings sprouting from her shoulder-blades. Her child, and the child of the man she despised.
