Description

Names: Bourke's Parrot, Bourke's Parakeet, Bourke Scientific name: Neopsephotus bourkii (Formerly Neophema bourkii) Conservation status: Least Concern Info: The Bourke's Parrot is a parrot originating from Australia. It is about 18-23 cm long, with a tail length of 9 cm. The females tend to be smaller than the females. The males weigh about 47 g and the females weigh about 41 g. Wildtype Bourke's Parrots display a basically brown colouration with a pink abdomen and breast, and a blue rump. The legs are dark brown with zygodactyl toes. The bill is grey. The adult male has a blue forehead and the adult female has little or no blue. The parrot's feathers help it blend in with the reddish soil of its home. There are colour mutations: yellow, Isabel, fallow, pink and rosa. The bird's call is rather frequent mellow 'chu-vee'. Bourke's Parrots forage on the ground for grasses and seeds. They are most active feeding at dawn and dusk. Captive birds can be fed a number of different things including small parrot seed mixes, hard-boiled eggs, fresh twigs and buds (that are non-toxic), and fresh fruit and vegetables.
