Hearts of the Wild Chapter One Sammie I woke up to see the sun shining bright on my face. A new morning was here; and it was certainly a beautiful one. I rolled out of bed and started to prepare myself for school; brushing my fangs teeth, getting dressed in a cute shirt with an inspirational quote on it and a sky-blue skirt with clouds on it, and adjusting my cat ears so they were at the perfect position on my head. I was about to walk out the door when I realized that it was summer. I silently facepalmed. Of course I had realized after I had gotten all ready. Suddenly, my tail drooped and my ears went back. Wait- what? I felt the top of my head gently where I had felt the ears. Nothing. Same with my behind. No tail, either. I swear I had felt them a few moments ago. Weird. I shrugged off the feeling and started to walk towards my sister Lacey’s room. I knocked on the door gently, making sure not to be too loud in case she was still asleep. “Lace? You there?” I asked. “Just a moment.” A voice sounded from behind the door. A few seconds later, the door creaked open. Lacey was a simple girl, tall with black hair. Her black hair was hiding the little cochlear implants that she used to hear. I keep begging her to put her hair up and show her devices to people, but she keeps saying that she doesn’t like to attract attention. “Well?” I said, excitement bristling up inside of me. “Well what?” She asked. “You said that we would go to the park on the first day of summer. That’s today!” She smiled. “Right. How could I forget? Come on.” I followed behind her, barely able to keep in my excitement. I could feel my tail- even though it wasn’t actually there- wagging furiously. “Can we get sandwiches at the pier?!” I asked as we walked, practically skipping. Lacey chuckled. “Yeah, of course.” As we got closer to my favorite grassy spot, I could see some people playing on it. They were wearing tails made out of yarn and animal masks with fur on them; plus, they were walking around on all fours. I know it’s rude to stare, but I couldn’t help but look at them. “Lacey? What are they doing?” I asked. “Oh- um, I don’t know.” She replied. “They look cool.” Lacey looked almost shocked. “Really? You think it’s cool?” “Yeah.” I said. “I wish I could join in.” Lacey looked like she was stopping to think about something before calling me back into reality. “Come on. Let’s get our sandwiches.” Lacey was silent for the rest of the time we were walking to the pier, and throughout the whole time we were eating the sandwiches. Even as we walked home, she still stayed quiet for the rest of the day. By the time we got home, it was nighttime. I started to settle down, trying to ignore the feeling of the tail and the ears that had been there the entire day, until finally, I fell asleep.. and dreamed.
