Oyster Crackers: Behind the Cracker’s History and Popularity (this is a joke “essay” by the way, i was bored) Total: 408 words How does one begin to describe the wonder that is oyster crackers? Whether you enjoy them in chili and soup or by themselves, oyster crackers have something to offer everyone. They’re salty, crunchy, and delicious, and they go well with many types of food. Let’s explore the history of oyster crackers, why they’re so amazing, and improvements that could be made. The history of oyster crackers begins in 1847 with Adam Exton. While he is credited with the invention of oyster crackers, another company, the Westminster Cracker Company, disagreed, claiming that they came up with the cracker about twenty years earlier, in 1828. These tiny crackers got their name because, not only are they shaped like oysters, but because they were- and still are- often put in soups and stews with seafood. Oyster crackers may have an interesting origin, but why are they so popular? To begin with, oyster crackers keep their shape and crunch even when they’ve been put in soup, unlike many other crackers, which become soft and soggy. They’re also incredibly easy to make with only a few ingredients; most recipes include only 5 or 6 ingredients, such as vegetable oil and salt. Also, they go well with many foods. You can put them in soups, like I mentioned before, or even in salads or by themselves. Some even eat them dipped in hot sauce. Finally, almost anyone can eat them. You can even buy gluten-free oyster crackers if you’re allergic to gluten. While oyster crackers have many qualities that make them so delicious, that’s not to say that improvements can’t be made. Most oyster crackers that you can buy aren’t seasoned (other than salt), and there are very few flavors of crackers available at your average grocery store. More flavors, such as cheese, garlic, or crackers with seasonings such as paprika or cayenne pepper could be introduced. Sweet oyster crackers could even be made, perhaps with caramel or chocolate drizzled on top. Some types of oyster crackers could even be bigger for people who prefer to eat them by themselves rather than in soup or salad. In conclusion, oyster crackers are a delicious appetizer or snack with an interesting history. Their saltiness and crunch have made them the favorites of people across the world. While there are still many improvements that could be made, it’s safe to say that oyster crackers are, for good reason, an incredibly popular and mouthwatering food for every occasion.
