Green flag. A Kind Of Spark is an AMAZING book and TV series. It talks about neurodivergence in a good way, taking us through the good and the bad, so many people (including me) feeling included. The autistic characters are played by autistic actors and it is just *mwah*. Also, it doesn't talk about autism being a 'struggle' that you 'have to get through' and also doesn't talk about it as a 'charm' or 'superpower'. The original book this was based on was written by a neurodivergent author and they are now one of my favourites! So go ahead, read the book, watch the series! I 100% reccomend it! A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE STORYLINE- S1: Addie, a young autistic girl, learns about the Ancient Witch Trials, and wants a memorial for the women wrongly accused of 'witchcraft'. Along the way, she makes a new friend, gets bullied and gets put down and rejected several times, also seeking justice against an unfair teacher, but she makes it through. Also it sort of looks into the past of Maggie and Elinor Frasier, two people living in the time of the Witch Trials. S2: Addie is back, and she discovers an abadoned bookshop, while Addie's older sisters, Nina and Keedie, are making big decisions about their future. It doesn't look into the past too much, but there are some historical-y bits in there. Oh, and Bonnie. I can't forget Bonnie. She's Keedie's old friend. Well, well... OH NO! THE WORLD WILL EXPLODE! Eheheheheh Jk Wowie! You're at the end! Here is a quote from the series: "Autism isn't something you HAVE, it's something you ARE," -Addie's Mum, A Kind Of Spark. I could not agree more. You can have a spoon, but you aren't a spoon, you can have a bed but you aren't a bed. (sorry, spoongender and bedgender people, if you are out there) But I also can disagree. A disability or condition does not define you, and can't define you. Don't listen to stereotypes, y'all!
Well done to me for typing the longest description I have ever typed! A Kind Of Spark is currently streaming on BYUtv and BBC iPlayer! (That is, if you want to watch it.) Thanks to Google, and then A Kind Of Spark, for the Images! Characters I didn't include in the collage: Nina: Addie's older sister and Keedie's twin, with a boyfriend called Frank and a beauty channel. Frank: Nina's boyfriend with a love for history, and wants to be a Young Counsellor (in S2) Emily: Addie's bully who is really mean and unfair and against autism Jenna: Addie's ex-best friend who went off with Emily because of her 'cool stuff' Maggie Frasier: One of the women falsley accused of witchcraft, living in medeival times. Elinor Frasier: Maggie's sister who was autistic before people had a name for it.
