Phantom Fangs ————————— (chapter one) Lynette ran through the forest, her black paws pounding against the grass. She dodged trees and leapt over boulders. She wanted to stop, to slow down, to take a break. But she couldn’t stop now. If she did, she’d die- and lose her fox body once again. This time it might be permanent. She knew that she couldn’t run from the fire much longer. The smoke was catching up to her- the burning agony of the flames filling her nostrils, stinging her eyes, clouding her mind- threatening to make her slow down, maybe even stop completely. But she didn’t. She kept running, pushing herself to the limit. She couldn’t see, she couldn’t breathe, and she couldn’t hear anything but the crackle of the fire. She knew that the fire had her surrounded. As the fire drew closer, Lynette fell to the ground as everything went black- And then she woke up. Lynette was back in her human body, in her human bed, in her human house. She looked at her small, shaky, tan-colored hands and sighed. She hated those scary dreams, Her whole life, Lynette had had dreams like this. Dreams of being a fox. And what she had learned within her twelve years of lifetime was that her dreams always spelled the truth. She was a true red fox therian. Suddenly, she heard a knock on the door. A strange sort of scraping knock that made Lynette freeze in her tracks. It was probably her mother. Nothing to worry about. Right? After hearing the scraping and knocking for a while, she groggily stood up, walked to the door, and reached for the doorknob. She stopped. Her mom wasn’t home. She wouldn’t be home until next week.
