Now, Winter. Ah, Winter. Everyone is saying Winterwatcher is toxic, but I think otherwise. It probably was toxic during Winter Turning, but Winter's a new dragon now. He had been taught all his life to hate NightWings, and did everyone expect him to toss all his twisted morals out the window right away? No, he threw them away slowly and realistically. When he saw the innocent dragonets in the rainforest, when he saw how much Moon cared for her friends, and finally when he found out in the Ice Kingdom what really happened with Arctic and Foeslayer, the story his hate was based on. All the times he yelled at Moon in Winter Turning were because his morals were fighting with his feelings and it aggrieved him terribly and he just wanted it to stop. Particularly when he was leaving for the Ice Kingdom. ''We can never be together.'' He was trying to spare Moon the pain of seperating that he was feeling making a clean cut. Same kind of logic that parents use when they sell their kid's beloved cat without telling them instead of letting it die peacefully of natural causes. Good intentions, but wrong results. When you want to argue that Winter was mean when he snapped at Moon at Darkstalker's palace in Darkness of Dragons, don't forget that he was conpletely right. Moon was being a bit naive to think that Darkstalker was a good guy, despite what he had done. And Winter had been brainwashed by him and he had killed Winter's queen, so he was even more angry and frustrated by this. Who wouldn't snap? And we can be sure Winter has changed. He actively chose to go back to Moon instead of staying in his kingdom. Once he heard Foeslayer's story, he knew how wrong he had been. But can we be sure Qibli has changed? Has he gotten rid of HIS toxic habits? We don't know he has stopped wanting to be an animus. His saying no to Darkstalker could be because he knew the latter wouldn't deliver on his promise. He even only said that he said no because he knew Darkstalker would use him, not because he didn't want it anymore. And we don't know he's stopped wanting everyone to like him. We don't see any changes in his personality. Finally, it's Winter's reaction when Moon chooses Qibli that really convinced me that he isn't a toxic dragon. He's quite calm and accepting. A truely manipulative dragon would try to make Moon choose them and guilt-trip her for her decison. Instead, Winter understood and respected her choice, and that's what makes me think that Winterwatcher is actually a good, healthy ship --- or at least better than Moonbli. Feel free to disagree in the comments but be warned I might unleash long rants on you lol. · And I never said Qibli was bad, actually. He got his behavior from a toxic resource. He has no idea what he's doing, as proved when he couldn't comprehend why Winter would yell at Moon and run the risk of being hated by her. Toxic behavior =/= bad person I’m sorry but I kinda dislike Moonwatcher. She’s just annoying after book 6. (Also pretty stupid/gullible, like why was she siding with Darkstalker?) I don’t like Winterwatcher, but Winter obviously gave up more for Moonwatcher than Qibli. I feel like Winterwatcher had more chemistry than Moonbli had in all of arc 2. Qibli should have been the one to confess, not Moonwatcher who has not shown the slightest amount of romantic interest in Qibli until the Epilouge of DoD. Anyway back to why I don’t like Moonwatcher. She’s just like all the other first book protagonists. They just loose their whole arc and personality and are kind of just there for the rest of the arc. She’s only there for Winter and Qibli. Tui wrote her like she’s an object. Moonwatcher just felt dry. I’d probably like her if she still had a personality. I don’t think Moon even cares about Winter’s trauma. She literally doesn’t care/know about all the things his lost. The Moon after book 6 doesn’t deserve Winter OR Qibli. With Moon's upbringing (i.e., being kept away from 99.999999999% of the local dragon population), she likely didn't learn to understand dragons besides her mother that much—and she clearly finds mind-reading overwhelming. So I don't think it's that she "doesn't care" or "doesn't know" about Winter's trauma—it's that she also has a lot of other things to deal with. Also, as for the Darkstalker one, she was likely just relieved that there was someone else who had the same powers as her, AND he has been shown to be extremely manipulative. As Kinkajou once said (AAARGH I VERY STRONGLY dislike her but I HAVE to quote this), "But he can shield the...EVIL thoughts..."
