Instructions

The legendary jazz pianist Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for this project. His improvisations often included surprising, dissonant and angular melodies. One of his characteristic tricks was to play rapid runs up and down the piano on a scale called the whole tone scale. Hold the up and down arrow keys to play up and down this scale. Press the space key to reset the note if you go too high or too low! You can also listen to a short clip from Monk's solo on his tune "In Walked Bud" from his album "Misterioso."

Description

The whole tone scale has a whole tone, or two semitones, between each note. This means that you can play the whole tone scale on the "play note" block by changing the note by 2 steps each time. The audio clip is from this youtube video, during Monk's solo at about 7:30 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuHjgKQDofs
