Instructions

Have you ever wondered how a gentle push of the brake pedal can bring you to a stop quickly and safely? This interactive explanation showcases the inner workings of the standard automotive braking system. Click anywhere and drag up or down to apply the brakes and view what happens. Most parts can be hovered over with the mouse to view a description. Please let me know if you have any questions, corrections, or suggestions for future mechanisms to recreate in Scratch : ) TurboWarp can be used for smoother animations: https://turbowarp.org/1025961359/ The brake pedal is in the top left, the top right is a brake booster and hydraulics assembly, the bottom left is a brake light, and the bottom right is a cutaway view of a tire so that the brake pads and calipers are easily visible. The model uses a disk brake configuration. Drum brakes work in a similar fashion, except the brake pads expand from the inside of the drum rather than clamping down onto a rotor. This is by no means a simulation of real mechanical parts, components are not drawn to scale, mechanisms are oversimplified, and there may be errors in depictions or explanations of components and their functions; however, if you have any corrections that you think should be made, please let me know. Correction: Several tooltips mention that fluids are not easily compressible. These tooltips should instead state that liquids are not easily compressible. Both gasses and liquids are considered fluids, so some fluids (gasses such as air) can be easily compressed.
